Reverse Projection: Camera Match Overlay (Module 5)

This module is designed to advance the student’s knowledge of 3D rendering and re-construction through use of the iNPUT-ACE Camera Match Overlay Tool. Students will learn to use the Overlay Tool to overlay video evidence on top of point cloud data, allowing for accurate measurements and calculations within a documented margin of error. Additionally, students will gain the ability to measure object locations through Reverse Projection and 3D laser scan geometry.

The content for this class is delivered in two parts: First, students must watch a 2-hour, pre-recorded video that focuses on theory. Second, students will attend a 3-hour live, hands-on session with the instructor.

Module 5 Learning Objectives

  • Understand the fundamentals of Reverse Projection
  • Understand the fundamentals of 3D Reverse Projection
  • Demonstrate the ability to perform 3D Reverse Projection
  • Understand the variables that affect Margin of Error
  • Demonstrate the ability to calculate Margin of Error

Module 5 Course Outline

  • Reverse Projection and Laser Scanning
  • Understanding the iNPUT-ACE Camera Match Overlay Workflow
  • Walkthrough of case examples
    • Camera Match Overlay
    • Integrating with 3D Modeling/Point Clouds
    • Correcting Lens Distortion
    • Matching (Registering) Points
    • Calculating Margin of Error

Calculating Vehicle Speed From Video (Module 6):

In this module, students learn how to calculate accurate timing from video using the iNPUT-ACE Variable Frame Rate (VFR) Lightboard. This method will help students understand how to utilize recorded video while acknowledging the challenges that can complicate these calculations, such as variable refresh rates, compression, rolling shutter, and more.

The introduction to HEX will help students understand the basic building blocks of video files and how different codecs read the metadata that can create inaccuracies in older methods of calculating speed.

Module 6 Learning Objectives

  • Understand how timing is stored in video files
  • Comprehend the basics of HEX
  • Recognize the depth and complexity of compression
  • Demonstrate an ability to use the VFR Lightboard and articulate each of the steps in the process

Module 6 Course Outline

  • Examination of timing metadata
  • Introduction to HEX
  • Advanced video compression
  • VFR Lightboard step-by-step
